• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Robert FisherTop Contributor: Anime -- A thoughtful yet entertaining "just suppose..." novel : I found out about this book thanks to a nice Wall Street Journal review and it lived up to the hype. It starts with Freydis Eriksdottir, who leads a group of Vikings down the Atlantic, into the Caribbean islands and on to Central America, giving the indigenous people new knowledge that gives them an edge when Christopher Columbus shows up. We meet Atahualpa, an Inca monarch fleeing a bad fallout with his royal brother. Atahualpa gathers a remarkable company about him, especially the Taino woman Higuenamota, and they make their way to the Portuguese coast. Before long, Atahualpa is proving a shrewd leader, becoming the dominant power player in Europe. Laurent Binet gives us a novel that has great characters, thought provoking concepts, a fine pace and even a subtle sexiness. Civilizations proved a book that was a terrific end of summer read. Leal -- Entertaining What If : I am a mestizo, so to say that I was intrigued by this fictional alternative history is more like saying that I was torn by the two opposing universes. The level of cultural and historic detail the author uses is incredible without going into the realm of boring. Is it possible for historical fiction to be accurate? Five hundred years later, Christopher Columbus lands in America, confident in his faith and his mission, even as he and his crew get taken captive by the Incas. Thirty years later, Atahualpa, leaves the area after a dispute with his brother in Columbus's restored ship and sails to Europe. He finds a city in chaos due to an earthquake, and as he travels on through the continent, he finds people divided by religion and war. Except that the author could not keep up the momentum and the quality of the writing fell off. Far from being erudite and witty as with his previous book, it descended into the equivalent of monotone. It actually felt like a rather boring history book and I wonder if the author was playing some form of practical joke on me. So a great idea for a novel but it could have been so much better. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from lastoftheholdouts -- Dashing fun : This may not be as satisfying as his first two books but it is still great fun and further establishes Binet's reputation as the most dashing of practising European novelists. Civilisations lost me a couple of times - Atahuelpa's march on the Hapsburgs seemed to go on forever - but the novel is packed with ideas about religion, philosophy and the illusion that is accepted historical record. What if Columbus failed and Europe was the “New World” conquered by the Incas and the Aztecs? Like all the best historical fiction, it has inspired me to learn about what really happened.
